Kaohsiung is located in the south of the Tropic of Cancer and is part of tropical region with low latitude; furthermore, the North Equatorial Current, which comes from the nearby equator, flows from the south to the north through the Taiwan Strait, affecting the temperature and causing it to rise. Therefore, the temperature here is relatively higher all year round; even the average temperature in the coldest month is over 18 so no real winter exists. With respect to the rainy season and average rainfall, it is extremely dry in the winter, and rainfall is generally concentrated in the southwest during the monsoon period of summer as a result of being located in the rain’s shadow area of northeast monsoons; the rainy season is unremarkable. As to the rainfall’s intensity, it mainly occurs from May through September and is especially strong in June, July and August.
